Growing up, did you love watching the lightning bugs light up your backyard on summer nights? Imagine watching hundreds of the bioluminescent beetles fly around Elkmont, providing a light show like no other. The dark forest is illuminated by a silent symphony of luminescent bugs fly through the night. Could you dream of a better way to spend a summer night?

Planning ahead is key for this spectacular event. Due to temperatures, it is predicted the fireflies will be most present from May 31st- June 7th. However, they can be spotted during the first two weeks of June.

Where do I park? Will transportation services be running to Elkmont?

The event is so popular it attracts over 12,000 people annually. It’s important to plan ahead for this event so you can enjoy one of our favorite  Smoky Mountain traditions. Parking is limited. Passes can be obtained by entering a lottery system. A shuttle system will also be operating under a lottery system. For more information about parking and shuttle services visit .

What can you bring?

Bring a blanket/chair, a flashlight and enjoy the show! Anticipate the event being very dark. Safety is first and foremost. Be sure to bring a flashlight to ensure safe walking and moving around Elkmont. Flashlights should be covered with red or blue cellophane (usually available at the check-in desk).
