Smoky Mountain Hiking Trails
What could possibly bring you closer to the Smoky Mountains than going right into it?
There are dozens of hiking trails in Gatlinburg and Townsend complete with a variety of trails, ranging from casual to extreme, and featuring a plethora of streams, flowers, waterfalls and even sights of wildlife. Best of all, all the hiking trails are free for all to enjoy!
Here are a few recommended hiking trails to visit while in the Smokies.
* Laurel Falls:
A 2.6-mile round-trip hike on the Laurel Falls Trail. The trail is paved to the falls. The trailhead is 3.9 miles west of Sugarlands Visitor Center on Little River Road.
* Rainbow Falls:
A 5.5-mile round-trip hike. The trail starts from the Rainbow Falls parking area on Cherokee Orchard Road near Gatlinburg.
* Grotto Falls:
A 2.6-mile hike on the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail in the city of Gatlinburg. The parking lot for this trail is 1.6 miles into the loop. This is an easy trail for beginners and families with small children.
* Abram Falls:
A 4.2-mile hike inside Cades Cove. The Falls are some of the largest and most beautiful in the Smokies. Well worth bringing a good camera for.
* Charlie’s Bunion:
A 8.1-mile hike starting at Newfound Gap. This a more advanced hike featuring elevations over a mile above sea level and panoramic views of the Smokies. A good trail for experienced hikers.
A 1.25-mile hike starting at the Sugarland Visitor Center. This is an excellent hike for children, families, and casual hikers. Wildlife and historic icons can be seen on this trail.
* Chimney Tops:
A 4.0-mile hike starting at Newfound Gap Road. This is one of the most popular trails on the main drive through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and features excellent views of the National Park for miles around.
* Cades Cove:
11 miles of Nature and the rich history of Tennessee. Deer, Wild Turkey, and sometimes Bear find their way into your line of sight making this one of the most popular tours here. Historical log homes, hand hewn in the Smokies, by early pioneers offer fun & informative diversions along the way. It is also possible to walk, bike or stroll along this paved road.
