Take a Ride on the Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster

Have you ever been on a roller coaster that puts you in charge of how fast your ride goes? How about a coaster that is virtually silent? No? Not surprising as most coasters have chain drives that take you to the top of the first drop, noisy tracks, and more. After finding the perfect cabins in Gatlinburg, TN.  The next thing to do, at least for most families, is to start looking for things to do. The Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster is quite unique and one of only a few similar roller coasters in the world.

Sliding Down the Mountainside

Unlike most big coasters, the only thing propelling you along the tracks in your one or two-person car is gravity. You won’t find any clunky noisy drive chains here. The cars are returned to the launch area at the top, where you get in one and ride the rails to the bottom. Without chain drives, ratcheting locks, and noisy brakes, the ride is very quiet. The only sounds you hear when riding the Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster is the whisper of the wheels on the rails and the many sounds of the forests around Gatlinburg, TN.

You Are In Control

One of the biggest benefits of riding this coaster is that you are in charge of how fast you go down the mountainside. That’s right! Each car has a handbrake that lets you slow down or stop if you so choose. You can creep along and enjoy the sights and sounds of the forest or you can keep your hands off the brake and hit speeds of up to 35 mph. The good news is that the entire track is protected by safety rails designed to keep you from going anywhere but down the track.

The Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster is open 7 days a week come rain or shine, even when it’s snowing. If you visit Gatlinburg, TN at different times of the year, the rides offer an amazing variety of experiences. There are spring and summer wildflowers to see, spring is also when many of the animals here have their babies, you might catch a fawn or maybe a mama raccoon and her family.

Fall here in the Smokies means a cornucopia of colors such as oranges, yellows, browns, reds, and golds as the trees prepare for the long winters. However, the coaster doesn’t shut down for winter, it stays open day and night so bring your camera and bundle up, the mountains and trees are a sight to behold when covered in a blanket of pure white snow. The snow also makes for an amazingly quiet ride from the top to the bottom.
